It has been really eye-opening to see the ‘other side’.

My First Month with EYM-society at Leeds Beckett University.

By Leanne Crichton

I first met Edenamiuki on my way to Burley train station, he was also wanting to go to the station but wasn’t sure where it was, so I showed him the way. We got talking and realized we were both going to the same university (Leeds Beckett) and were studying in the same department. Well, after I told him I was studying Performance he was straight on it, telling me about Elevate Young Minds and all the events they do. He got me following the Facebook page and told me to keep a lookout and just get involved in everything! That was great advice. As I’m doing my first year at Leeds Beckett, he keeps popping up in my lectures and some workshops promoting EYM and his own projects. It was obviously meant to be, I got in contact with Edenamiuki a few months ago to learn more about the society and how to get more involved. During the meeting he told me about all the possibilities he could open up towards me such as going to Lisbon/Brussels to a Young Mind’s Matter festival, getting involved with fundraising and how to get my name out into the industry.

Straight after the meeting, I signed up to EYM Society and got involved in some of the projects, and since then it has been great! I am currently working as the Fundraising Manager for the Tanzania project with a Young Creative Leaders team, helping them raise money for the upcoming trip. It has been really eye-opening to see the ‘other side’ of the fundraising with all the networking and promoting, and especially all the hard work that goes into it from everyone going. I have also recently been accepted to be part of the Creative Marketing team for the Young Minds Matter project and will be hearing more information about my role within the next few days.

This is something I am extremely excited about getting involved in and I know it is going to be a great experience. Joining the society has also given me the drive to look into my future, plan my career and really look at my five-year plan. It has given me the confidence to just go out there and audition/apply for roles that I wouldn’t have before due to me thinking I was under qualified or not ready. I have so much to look forward to this year along with the Young Minds Matter project and me also auditioning for Latitude festival along with Leeds Beckett and SBC theatre company, and it’s all thanks to the push Edenamiuki and joining the society has given me. I am ecstatic to see what else will come along in the future with me knowing I have a group of inspirational people in my corner.
